Why Do Dance Shoes Fit Differently Over Time? | Anita Flavina

A pair of dance shoes can fit beautifully for months — sometimes years — and then suddenly begin to feel tighter, looser or simply different.

It is easy to assume that something has changed with the shoe.

But often, it is the dancer’s feet that have changed.

For dancers, our feet are constantly working. Training, repetition, pressure through the forefoot and the demands of Latin and Ballroom movement can all influence how a shoe feels over time.

That is why we believe one of the most important parts of choosing dance shoes is understanding that your shoe size and width are not necessarily fixed forever.

Your Feet Can Change Over Time

A dancer may have worn the same size and width successfully for a long period and then discover that the same specification no longer feels quite right.

This does not necessarily mean that the shoe has changed.

The shape and dimensions of the foot can gradually change too.

For example, you may notice:

  • increased width across the forefoot
  • changes in how the toes sit inside the shoe
  • a different feeling around the heel
  • pressure in an area that previously felt comfortable
  • one foot beginning to fit differently from the other

For dancers in particular, the way the foot is repeatedly used inside a dance shoe can make these differences much more noticeable.

Dance Shoes Fit Differently From Everyday Shoes

Dance shoes are designed to work closely with the foot.

Unlike many everyday shoes, there should not be large amounts of unused space inside them.

A close fit helps the shoe respond to the dancer’s movement and provides a better connection with the floor.

This is particularly important in Latin dancing, where the foot is continually pointing, flexing and articulating through the floor.

Because the fit is close, even a relatively small change in the width or shape of the foot can make a noticeable difference.

A shoe that once felt perfectly comfortable may therefore begin to feel tighter even though the shoe specification itself has remained the same.

Why We Recommend Re-Measuring

Many dancers automatically reorder the same size they have worn before.

Often that works perfectly.

But if your existing shoes suddenly feel different, or if you have not measured your feet for some time, we recommend measuring again before ordering your next pair.

At Anita Flavina, we look at more than simply the length of the foot.

Width is extremely important.

Two dancers may wear the same length but require completely different width fittings.

Our ladies' Latin shoes are available in:

Narrow
Regular
Wide
Extra Wide

We can also offer made-to-measure widths when a standard fitting is not suitable.

This allows the shoe to be selected around the dancer's foot as it is today, rather than relying only on the size they have historically worn.

Length Is Only Part of the Fit

When dancers talk about shoe size, the focus is often on length.

But width can change how a shoe feels just as dramatically.

If the forefoot becomes wider, a shoe may suddenly feel difficult to put on even when the length is still correct.

The toes may also sit differently within the front of the shoe, and straps that previously felt comfortable may begin to feel tighter.

This is why we encourage dancers to consider both length and width when assessing fit.

Simply increasing the shoe length is not always the right solution to a width issue.

One Foot May Be Different From the Other

Very few people have two completely identical feet.

One foot may naturally be slightly longer, wider or shaped differently from the other.

These differences can become more noticeable in dance shoes because of their close construction.

When measuring your feet, we therefore recommend checking both feet.

If there is a significant difference, speak to us before ordering so that we can advise on the most appropriate fitting.

Your Perfect Fit Can Change

There is an important message we want dancers to remember:

The fact that a particular size fitted you perfectly before does not guarantee that the same specification will always be your ideal fit.

Professional dancers, amateur competitors and social dancers can all experience changes in their feet.

That is completely normal.

The goal should not be to remain attached to one number printed inside a shoe.

The goal is to find the shoe that fits your foot properly now.

The Right Fit Supports Better Dancing

A correctly fitted dance shoe should feel connected to the foot rather than separate from it.

For Latin dancers in particular, this helps the dancer use the foot naturally through:

  • pointing
  • articulation
  • weight transfer
  • floor connection
  • turns and spins

Fit also works together with the construction of the shoe.

The width, heel placement, straps, cushioning, sole flexibility and level of support all contribute to how secure the dancer feels.

This is why shoe selection should never be based on size alone.

Different Dancers Need Different Solutions

There is no single fitting that is correct for every dancer.

Some dancers prefer greater flexibility.

Others need more support.

Some have narrow feet.

Others require a wider forefoot.

And sometimes a dancer's requirements change as their dancing develops.

At Anita Flavina Dance Shoes, many of our models can therefore be adapted with different fittings and construction options.

For example, our ladies' Latin shoes can be ordered in different widths, while selected models can also be made with a longer metal shank for additional stability.

The objective is always the same:

to help the shoe work with the dancer rather than asking the dancer to adapt to the shoe.

When Should You Measure Your Feet Again?

Consider re-measuring if:

  • your usual dance shoes suddenly feel tighter
  • you struggle to put on a specification that previously fitted
  • your toes are sitting differently in the shoe
  • you notice increased pressure across the forefoot
  • one foot feels noticeably different from the other
  • you have increased or changed your training
  • it has simply been a long time since you last checked your measurements

Even if you have worn the same size for years, checking again can prevent unnecessary fitting problems.

Need Help With Your Dance Shoe Fit?

If you are unsure about your size, width or fitting, send us your measurements and speak to the Anita Flavina team before ordering.

We can advise you on the most appropriate size, width and model for your feet.
