Custom Latin Dance Shoes Designed with Dancer Feedback | Anita Flavina

Why Dancer Feedback Creates Better Custom Latin Dance Shoes

At Anita Flavina Dance Shoes, we believe the best footwear innovations do not begin only at the design table—they begin on the dance floor.

Every dancer moves differently, and every foot has its own shape, proportions and support requirements. Technique, weight placement and preferred heel height can also influence how a shoe feels and performs. That is why listening to the dancers who wear our shoes is central to our design philosophy.

Amateur dancer Emily Megan Martin's experience is a perfect example. By listening carefully to her feedback and adapting the internal construction of her shoes, we created a personalised solution designed around her individual needs.

Every Latin Dancer Is Different

Latin dancing requires precision, balance and confidence. From fast spins and changes of direction to controlled landings and expressive footwork, dancers need footwear that feels secure without restricting movement.

Many dancers naturally distribute their weight through the centre of the foot. Emily found that her natural weight placement sat further back, concentrating more pressure around the heel.

She loved the comfort of her Anita Flavina Dance Shoes, but the standard construction was not ideally matched to her biomechanics and dancing style. She needed a different level of internal support to help the shoe remain stable beneath her.

Rather than accepting this as simply “the way it is,” we worked with Emily to understand what she was experiencing and identify a practical solution.

Listening to Emily's Feedback

Meaningful innovation begins with detailed feedback.

We discussed when Emily felt the movement in the shoe, how her weight travelled through her foot and which actions made her feel least secure. This helped us understand that the answer was not simply more cushioning or a tighter fit. Emily needed a different internal structure.

Our design team developed a custom solution by replacing the standard short metal shank with a longer metal shank.

The shank is a supportive component built into the sole of the shoe. Its length influences the balance between support and flexibility. A short shank allows greater movement through the sole, while a longer shank provides more structure beneath the heel and arch.

Why Emily Needed a Longer Shank

When a dancer's weight is concentrated at the back of the foot, the additional pressure can push the heel of the shoe inwards or towards one side. This can reduce the dancer's sense of security and make the shoe feel less stable.

For Emily, the longer metal shank provided additional structural support. It helped distribute pressure more evenly through the shoe, reducing the concentration of load at the rear of the heel and supporting the foot towards its centre.

This gave the heel a more stable foundation while Emily continued working on centred weight placement through her training.

The trade-off is important: a longer shank makes the shoe less flexible. The right choice therefore depends on the dancer's individual technique, biomechanics and support requirements. It is not a universal solution for every dancer.

How the Custom Construction Changed the Shoe

The modification made an immediate difference to how Emily experienced her shoes.

She gained:

  • Greater heel stability
  • More even pressure distribution
  • Improved balance during spins and pivots
  • Increased confidence while dancing
  • Enhanced comfort during long practice sessions
  • A stronger sense of security through the shoe

The aim was not to change Emily's natural movement artificially. It was to give her footwear that provided the right support while she danced and continued developing her technique.

For Emily, the finished shoes felt more secure and better suited to the way she moved—allowing them to become a more natural extension of her feet.

Why Heel Stability Matters in Latin Dancing

Latin dancing involves rapid changes of direction, powerful actions, spins and controlled landings. If the heel of a shoe feels unstable, the dancer may begin compensating through the foot, ankle or posture instead of concentrating fully on the performance.

Appropriate heel placement and internal support can help dancers:

  • Finish turns with greater precision
  • Maintain more consistent balance
  • Feel secure throughout choreography
  • Reduce unnecessary muscular tension
  • Dance for longer with greater confidence
  • Focus on expression and performance rather than footwear

A dancer should not have to wonder whether the shoe beneath them will remain supportive. The right construction helps create the confidence to move freely.

Dance Shoe Innovation Through Real Feedback

At Anita Flavina, research and development does not stop when a shoe is launched.

We work with professional, amateur and ProAm dancers, using their real-world experiences to refine our collections. Every dancer brings valuable insight into how footwear responds during lessons, practice sessions, competitions and performances.

Their feedback can inspire improvements to:

  • Heel positioning and stability
  • Shank length and sole flexibility
  • Cushioning and pressure distribution
  • Width and toe shape
  • Strapping and security
  • Custom sizing and fit

This collaborative approach allows us to combine technical knowledge with experience from the dance floor. It is how thoughtful dance shoe innovation becomes meaningful performance support.
